Saturday, October 03, 2009 from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM (GMT)
The Arts Catalyst
present a free symposium on Non-Human Primates as part of the
Interspecies: artists collaborating with animals exhibition
3-6pm on Saturday 3 October 2009 with British Sign Language interpretation
A free seminar with Giovanni Aloi, editor of Antennae; Ruth Maclennan, artist; Helen Mcdonald, author of Falcon; Bryndis Snæbjörnsdóttir, artist; Karen Knorr, artist and photographer; chair Rob La Frenais, curator of Interspecies.
This
event frames the debate about animals in terms of post-human studies,
inspired by the philosophical writings of Donna Haraway and others. The
ethics of human-animal relationships are examined from different points of
view. Giovanni Aloi will give an overview of representation of human-animal
relationships in current artistic practice. Ruth Maclennan and Helen Macdonald
will examine the particularly close psychological relationship between the
hawker and the hawk, while Bryndis Snæbjörnsdóttir will outline the politics
of representation in such acts as taxidermy. Karen Knorr has for many years
dealt with power relationships in symbolic and pictorial terms in her
photographs of animals in stately homes and palaces, which leave the viewer
with an uneasy sense of presence or absence of the live animal juxtaposed in
displays of human power. Rob La Frenais, curator of Interspecies, will introduce a debate about how power relationships
between humans and animals are affected by debates about animal rights and
human interactions with animals. Followed
by a video presentation Primate Cinema workshop: How to Act Like an Animal
Admission free, but places are limited.
